We are thrilled to announce that the remarkable efforts led by our esteemed colleague Sasha-Monique Elvik at A/S Vinmonopolet have garnered recognition in the latest report by the respected nonprofit organization CARE Norway. The report focuses on the implementation of a gender perspective in human rights work. A/S Vinmonopolet’s invaluable contributions towards enhancing working conditions for both men and women in the sugarcane industry serve as a shining example of the remarkable success achievable when our private sector partners prioritize the implementation of vital protocols such as water, rest, shade, and sanitation.

CARE Norway lists A/S Vinmonopolet’s work as a “Best Practices” case study in the report: “In addition to general risk reducing measures such as more frequent breaks, shade, and working hours adapted to the heat, Vinmonopolet urged the sugarcane producers to ensure that women had access to sufficient sanitary facilities.”

Vinmonopolet found that women are reluctant to drink water in the absence of toilets. Furthermore, without access to toilets, female agricultural workers are at higher risk of sexual harassment.

“Not having access to toilets is not only a degrading experience but the reality is that women also need to have facilities when they have their periods, to ensure they can hygienically change tampons or sanitary pads,” mentioned the report.

In response to the distressing prevalence of chronic kidney disease of non-traditional cause (CKDnt) among sugarcane workers in Nicaragua, our organization, La Isla Network, embarked on a profound mission to safeguard these invaluable workers. After years of meticulous study and dedication, we have discovered a pivotal solution to this dire problem: the provision of essential resources including water, rest, shade, and sanitation.

Building upon our extensive research findings, we successfully implemented our transformative insights through the groundbreaking Adelante Initiative in 2017. This extraordinary program served as an innovative incubator, facilitating the design and scientific evaluation of crucial workplace interventions within the sugarcane industry.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed colleagues within the Adelante Initiative and to our partners at Bonsucro for the remarkable teamwork. Together, we’ve initiated this remarkable process of change, one that will undoubtedly safeguard the well-being of countless workers in the face of a rapidly changing climate.
