LIN CEO, Jason Glaser, has presented the keynote address at the GABV’s 2022 Annual Meeting, entitled “Dealing with the real risk of climate change – human lives and livelihoods.” The Banking on Values movement hosted its 2022 Annual Meeting virtually and was presented by co-founder BRAC Bank (Bangladesh). The theme, ‘Banking for Good in an Age of Change – How Values Can Secure a Positive Future’ provided a space for CEOs and co-workers from values-based banks to explore their challenges and opportunities in an era of rapid change.
Glaser highlighted the need for actors in development finance to be attuned to the severe dangers that climate change is producing for vulnerable workers at the foundations of our economies. Poor workers in agriculture, construction, mining, and other physical outdoor industries bear a disproportionate brunt of the consequences of climate change, most evident in the epidemic of heat-related chronic kidney disease (CKDnt) that is affecting tens of thousands of workers worldwide. The banking sector has a critical role to play in ensuring that projects that receive financing are those that put the lives and livelihoods of workers and their communities first.
