The Westras – Supporting LIN Since the Beginning

For the last decade, La Isla Network has been dedicated to protecting workers from the fatal effects of heat in a warming world. This is a significant global task, one that would be entirely impossible without the generous support of donors who trust and believe in the work we do. We have tremendous gratitude for the everyday individuals and families who have joined us in making a tangible impact in the lives of so many workers affected by extreme heat, and this month, we are grateful to shine a spotlight on one family who has been with us since the beginning.

1) Thanks for joining us! How did you first learn about the work of La Isla Network?

We first learned about the work of La Isla when we attended a screening of Jason Glaser’s documentary film Bananaland. Discussion afterwards focused on the plight of sugarcane workers in Nicaragua and La Isla’s work in the region.

2) What made you decide to start contributing as a donor?

We were impressed both by the plight of the workers and the data-driven and efficient work of La Isla in response to the problem.

3) Since then, why has it been important for your family to continue supporting LIN over the years?

We remain impressed by La Isla’s work. As the organization has expanded, it has been able to respond effectively to a range of issues by forming external partnerships and embedding itself within local communities. We like to support organizations that combine personal impact with a system-level approach.

4) Have there been any specific projects over the years that you’ve been most proud to have helped contribute towards?

Issues of human rights and environmental sustainability are interconnected in significant ways. La Isla has explored related sets of problems while developing both local roots and global credibility. We are always excited to hear about the next challenge or the next achievement.

5) The last year has been one of tremendous growth for the network. We have started a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor to build safe and healthy workplaces in Central America’s Northern Triangle, partnered with World Vision to protect workers in Mexico, advocated for the rights of migrant workers in Qatar who have been facing extreme heat stress and CKDnt ahead of FIFA World Cup 2022, and partnered with the Environmental Defense Fund to publish a report on the occupational heat risks facing farmworkers across the U.S. Are there any other areas that you would like to see LIN support in the future?

We would like to see La Isla continue its model of developing local partnerships in areas of need while having the courage to take on related sets of challenges across the globe.

Thanks so much for your time and your continued support!
