In Memoriam: Eric Biel

Eric Biel, Senior Advisor of the Fair Labor Association, passed away at home on November 27, said the Fair Labor Association. He is survived by his wife Dana Rosenfeld, his children David and Josh, and his brother Steven. Eric was born in Cleveland in 1959. He received a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and a joint J.D.-M.P.A. from Yale Law School and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton.

La Isla Network mourns the loss of Eric, whose dedication to human rights and labor rights will continue to inspire our work even in his absence. The Fair Labor Association said, “As a US government official, labor rights advocate, and law professor, his legacy is reflected in government policies and corporate practices that have improved workers’ lives around the world.” He achieved his life’s mission as a professor of law at Georgetown, as the Associate Deputy Undersecretary of the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB), and most recently at the FLA.

Jason Glaser, CEO and co-founder of La Isla Network, said,

“Eric Biel was one of the most supportive and kind people I met in DC. Not being able to meet up and grab a beer or coffee in DuPont and talk shop weighs heavily and I know a lot of my dear friends and colleagues are feeling the same right now. He made many of us better at our jobs and better leaders.”

Eric advocated for La Isla Network’s PREP 4 Change program, which builds off of the success of improving labor standards in Nicaragua, and brings it to the rest of Central America . He would frequently meet with LIN head Jason Glaser, who said, “As LIN started to grow he selflessly would meet with me and talk over strategy and approaches to the levers of power that could help the USG be the best version of itself and help LIN and bureaus like ILAB and NGOs like FLA achieve their mission to protect workers.” La Isla Network honors the life and work of Eric Biel.
