Chronic kidney disease of non-traditional origin (CKDnt) is an epidemic throughout Central America. The disease has affected thousands of workers, their households, and communities. La Isla Network (LIN) contracted an economist
at the Ray Marshall Center at the University of Texas at Austin to evaluate the economic impact of the disease on the community. With this objective, a pilot survey was conducted in the communities of La Isla, Manhattan, and Candelaria,
whose household’s primary employer is, or has been, the San Antonio Sugar Mill, and whose primary source of income was, or is, their position as field laborers. Some of the community members are also associated to ASOCHIVIDA, an association representing former workers and the widows of those who have died.
To evaluate the economic impact of the disease, LIN conducted a community survey. Eligible participants had someone in their household with CKDnt or had lost a member of their household to the disease within the past 10 years. The
survey collected demographic information, household characteristics, socio-economic status, medical care access, basic needs, and self-efficacy and resilience data.
