28 April 2023 is World Day for Safety and Health at Work, says the International Labor Organization. The decision was made in commemoration of the ILO’s decision last June to include “a safe and healthy working environment” in the ILO’s framework of fundamental principles and rights at work.

The ILO will be hosting a global dialogue on how to implement a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work. The dialogue will stream live on Friday, 28 April from 13:30 to 15:00 CEST (UTC+2).

With the designation, all member states of the ILO, “have an obligation arising from the very fact of membership in the ILO to respect, promote and realize, in good faith and in accordance with the ILO Constitution, the principles concerning the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment.” The lack of adequate OSH policies in various sectors is a serious problem. Yet, the solutions are already here. Among them are adequate water, rest, shade, and sanitation for workers.
