La Isla Network and Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell are calling upon responsible rum brands to step forward as leaders in the spirits industry and commit to protecting the health and livelihoods of the workers upon which the entire rum industry relies. The existence of great rum should not come at the expense of the health of those who make it possible.
LIN’s research and on-the-ground work has shown that the crisis of heat stress-related kidney disease affecting sugarcane workers is addressable. With our partners at the Adelante Initiative we have charted the path to eliminate this disease and other heat-related illnesses in the sugar industry and beyond. To achieve this, we need rum brands to ensure effective and evaluated worker protections throughout their supply chains. Together we can make this disease and other heat-related illnesses history.
