“In the Hot Zones” is a collection by Photographer and longtime LIN ally Ed Kashi, documenting the epidemic of heat-related kidney disease globally.
Heat-related kidney disease (commonly known as Chronic Kidney Disease of nontraditional causes [CKDnt]) is a debilitating, often fatal illness driven by exposure to extreme temperatures and strenuous labor without adequate protections like rest, water, and shade. It results from repeated episodes of heat stress and dehydration and involves the progressive failure of the kidneys. Without access to expensive health treatments like dialysis or transplantation, many with CKDnt in resource-poor environments ultimately die. In El Salvador and Nicaragua, the mortality rate of CKDnt is higher than HIV/AIDS, leukemia, and diabetes combined.
CKDnt is a growing global occupational health crisis being driven by climate change, which overwhelmingly affects the laboring poor at the base of some of the most profitable industries on earth. Kashi has been documenting this crisis alongside La Isla Network for the past decade; this collection documents the stories of those affected as well as the work of La Isla Network to address it.
Through multi-stakeholder partnerships like our Adelante Initiative, La Isla Network has been able to reduce hospitalizations due to kidney injury by 92% while providing a 22% return on investment for the participating mill.
We are honored to have Ed Kashi’s support and encouragement and are proud of the instrumental role he has played in helping to shine the global spotlight on this preventable epidemic.
