An initial estimate of costs and benefits of a water, rest, and shade intervention
La Isla Network has been working in collaboration with Ingenio San Antonio (ISA) in Nicaragua, on the implementation of a water, rest, and shade intervention to prevent risk factors associated with the development of chronic kidney disease of non-traditional cause (CKDnt) in sugarcane workers.
The Adelante Initiative is part of this collaboration where measures such as sufficient hydration, rest breaks, and installment of shaded spaces are implemented and monitored. Results of the initiative have demonstrated a reduction in the incidence of kidney injury in sugarcane workers. ISA’s management has supported the effort from the beginning, acknowledging the required investments to complete the implementation successfully.
