How is CKDnT different from CKD?

Chronic kidney disease of undetermined causes (CKDnT) is not the same as most of the CKD seen in rich countries.

It occurs in different age groups and occurs in poor agricultural communities.

CKDnT also leads to the progressive loss of kidney function. However, it is a unique disease physiologically and has different causal drivers than the majority of CKD addressed in health systems worldwide.

IDENTIFIED RISK FACTORS

Diabetes, vascular disease, genetic disorders and immune conditions are the predominant drivers of CKD in rich countries.

Working and/or living in poor agricultural communities in hot climates is the predominant risk factor for CKDnT.

The dominant drivers of CKD above present with glomerular damage.

Glomerular and tubular damage

According to latest biopsies, CKDnT affects both the tubules and glomeruli.

ALBUMIN (PROTEIN) IN URINE

High albumin

CKD can be quickly assessed with a urine test looking at proteins in the urine.

Low albumin

CKDnT does not present with high proteins in the urine until later stages of this disease. CKDnT specific surveillance and screening methods are essential to identify and and treat those affected.
